چکیده

We propose a biologically motivated novelty scene detection model that can indicate novelty of the scenes having affine transformed field of views in dynamic environment. Novelty detection can play an important role as an intrinsic motivation, which makes an autonomous mental development model try to obtain new information and adapt to changing environment. The proposed model has been developed based on understanding the functions of the brain organ such as the hippocampus for novelty detection in the limbic system as well as the visual path way from the retina to the visual cortex through the lateral geniculate neucleus(LGN). In the proposed model, we represent an input scene using a topology of a visual scan path obtained from a scaled saliency map generated by a visual attention model. In order to indicate novelty of a current input scene, the topology of a current input scene is compared with that of a previously experienced scene. In addition, the energy signature with scale information in the corresponding visual scan path is also considered to decide novelty of the input scene. The computer experimental results show that the proposed model successfully indicates novelty for natural color input scenes in dynamic visual environment. Keywords— Novelty scene detection, scaled saliency map, hippocampus, bottom-up and top-down attention model, adaptive resonance theory network

Graph-based Visual Saliency Model using Background Color

Visual saliency is a cognitive psychology concept that makes some stimuli of a scene stand out relative to their neighbors and attract our attention. Computing visual saliency is a topic of recent interest. Here, we propose a graph-based method for saliency detection, which contains three stages: pre-processing, initial saliency detection and final saliency detection. The initial saliency map i...

Spatial Visual Attention for Novelty Detection: A Space-based Saliency Model in 3D Using Spatial Memory

Saliency maps as visual attention computational models can reveal novel regions within a scene (as in the human visual system), which can decrease the amount of data to be processed in task specific computer vision applications. Most of the saliency computation models do not take advantage of prior spatial memory by giving priority to spatial or object based features to obtain bottom-up or top-...

Compressed-Sampling-Based Image Saliency Detection in the Wavelet Domain

When watching natural scenes, an overwhelming amount of information is delivered to the Human Visual System (HVS). The optic nerve is estimated to receive around 108 bits of information a second. This large amount of information can’t be processed right away through our neural system. Visual attention mechanism enables HVS to spend neural resources efficiently, only on the selected parts of the...

Natural scene text localization using edge color signature

Localizing text regions in images taken from natural scenes is one of the challenging problems dueto variations in font, size, color and orientation of text. In this paper, we introduce a new concept socalled Edge Color Signature for localizing text regions in an image. This method is able to localizeboth Farsi and English texts. In the proposed method rst a pyramid using diff...

Visual Attention and Novelty Detection: Experiments with Automatic Scale Selection∗

We present experiments with an autonomous inspection robot, whose task was to highlight novel features in its environment using camera images. Experiments were conducted with two different attention mechanisms — saliency map and multiscale Harris detector — and two different novelty detection mechanisms — the Grow-WhenRequired neural network and incremental PCA. For both mechanisms we compared ...
